Rick and Mary McAbee were born and raised on farms in Rutherford County. They have maintained a nursery since 2000 and recently took the Foothills Connect class on sustainable agriculture. Since then, they have been working to build a sustainable, chemical-free garden business, and have become convinced that the future of their county lies in a revival of farming.
When they first bought their land in Rutherfordton, it had laid fallow for about six years after being used as a cattle pasture. They now have about two acres in production, including their greenhouse. They cultivate a wide variety of flowers and vegetables, as well as bedding plants and bushes. They are able to grow many plants through the winter because of their greenhouse.
