New Hope Organics, has come a long ways from the old 1800’s tobacco growing farms. After the tobacco allotment buy out and my grandfather's death we began to look for new ways to use the farm land and make money. Not just rent the land. My husband and I were raised about 200 yards from each other. We played, went to school and worked together in our younger years. His grandparents passed and my grandfather bought the farm. Now after 39 years together were are still trying to make a living and help our children and grandchildren eat healthier. Looking to Howard Wallace and Milton Parker, we went to Columbus County Extension Office where we applied for a RAFI Grant, looked into a Natural Resources Conservation Service program with the prospect of going organic. Over the last 2 years we have erected 2 high tunnels with the sole purpose of having a longer growing season. Natural Recourses Conservation Service helped us start out with a 3 year organic certification program. We are in year 2 of the program. We use all certified organic products, like organic pest control and fertilizer, that can be monitored at any time. Also Richard Ward, of Wards Organic,(who has been growing organictly for 10 years not just vegetables but also organic tobacco), has helped with advice and mentored us in the right direction to become a profitable organic vegetable and fruit grower. I also do the Columbus County Farmers Market on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays when the market is open. We hope that you enjoy our goods through Down East Connect, with the help of Martha Campagna. If you would like a tour of New Hope Organics call 910-640-7277. Thank you Terrie Tyree
